Business Unit Controller Job Description
Our client is a division of a global publicly held manufacturer located in the San Gabriel Valley. They are seeking an ‘up and coming’ Controller, a talented, dynamic and driven individual who can achieve the next step in their 'Vertical Career' with this position. Position Summary: - Function as a strategic partner for the BU President / GM, providing strong financial leadership.
- Prepare timely & actionable analyses to support fact-based decisions.
- Drive actual financial results to exceed Plan. Continuously monitor variances, identify risks & opportunities and initiate corrective actions.
- Ensure financial benefits of major Continuous Improvement activities are sustained.
- Play a lead role in the acquisition process – from screen and select to valuation, due diligence and post acquisition integration.
Primary Accountabilities: - Ensure accounting records & monthly financial statements are prepared in accordance with Company policies and GAAP.
- Provide timely and relevant management reporting focused on KPI’s.
- Ensure development and maintenance of accurate product standard costs

- Ensure timely and accurate tax, statutory and regulatory reporting.
- Coordinate annual planning & budgeting process to ensure development of realistic plans focused on continuous improvement and supported by detailed actions plans. Ensure a thorough understanding of plan drivers, resources needed and opportunities/risks to facilitate development of cogent scenario & contingency plans.
- Coordinate / prepare accurate monthly & quarterly forecasts, including in-depth analyses and identification of corrective actions.
- Develop quality bridge schedules that demonstrate a thorough understanding of changes from forecast, plan, prior forecast and prior period actual.
- Ensure Capital Appropriation Requests (CAR’s) and Business Cases are properly prepared with thorough analysis of financial returns.
- Ensure internal controls and procedures are in compliance with Company Financial policies and SOX, and are consistently followed.
- Ensure safeguarding of assets and accuracy of perpetual inventory system.
- Recruit, develop and motivate a strong financial team promoting an environment of continuous improvement and best in class processes.
- Provide strong functional guidance to BU financial staff.
Secondary Accountabilities: - BU Controller assumes responsibility for actual implementation steps arising from strategy meetings.
- Explains unique issues facing BU to BU management and Company’s senior management.
- Assumes a lead role in forecasting the effects of changes in the economy and competitive data on the business unit’s operations
- Make recommendations to mitigate adverse business conditions and improve operational efficiencies.
- Identify & establish mitigation of relevant risks to minimize surprises and unplanned variances.
- Evaluation of acquisition targets allows management to make and informative decision whether to enter into M&A transactions.
- If target is acquired, BU Controller assumes responsibility as the Finance subject matter expert to integrate the business.
- BU Controller performs a post-acquisition evaluation assessment.
- Financial reports are prepared in sufficient detail to permit identification of significant operating and financial changes
- BU Controller Identifies key value drivers, variances and takes a proactive approach to resolution of performance issues.
- Ensures accurate ERP system set-up and procedures to maintain product standard costs.
- Meets reporting deadlines with accurate and compliant information
- Meet established timetable for budget submission.
- Budgets are prepared in accordance with corporate guidelines and in sufficient detail to evaluate actual performance.
- Incorporates market data into strategic planning to support investment and spending decisions, such as:
- MAPI Forecasts
- Commodity pricing trends
- GDP and other consumer spending expectations
- Strategic and Operational plans must be relevant and in-sync with underlying business and economic conditions.
- Adherence to Capital Appropriation Request (CAR) guidelines, including ROI and other analyses that support how investments will maximize the value of the business.
- Jointly with Internal Audit function responsible for annual SOX Management Testing.
- Zero audit findings along with Strong internal accounting controls, efficient and risk-based
- Timely and informative account analysis
- Controller function conducts periodic testing of assets
- Reconciliations, Physical observation
- Manages employee work and performance
- Provides fair and accurate feedback

- Provides guidance with day-to-day challenges
Qualifications: - Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting/Finance or related field
- MBA, CPA, and/or CMA preferred
- 7 to 10 years of progressive Accounting experience within components manufacturing
- Demonstrated success in achievement of profit and cash flow targets
- Successful experience in the details of planning, forecasting and “actionable” analysis
- Solid working knowledge of GAAP/IFRS/Sox compliance and proven ability to adhere to Corporate Accounting Policies & Procedures
- Solid cost accounting experience working with a standard cost system
- Strong Excel and modeling skills
- Experience with ERP systems in a manufacturing environment
